Dealing With Disability

The disabled form an
increasing percentage of the population. Many disabilities are hidden. You may have a hearing or visual
impairment, a neurological condition (eg, epilepsy) or an emotional disorder, such as depression. Others may
know of your disability but may feel shy to talk it over with you. Many people will know nothing. Suffering any
disability increases the difficulty of normal living.
Counseling the disabled enables them to find new solutions to the
difficulties they face and helps to focus on abilities. Where family members are involved as carers, counseling
both the disabled person and the carer can help keep problems in perspective.
